After working decades for the building and development industries as an arborist and environmental consultant, Mr. Kemper decided that the best way to effect change was to show the way. This begins with site planning. The first consideration is site character, the primary factor being topography and secondarily, vegetation.

After looking for an optimal site to showcase his tree business and demonstrate his design philosophy, Mr. Kemper purchased this particular site in 1999. With mature native oaks and interesting topography, the site's character reflects the regular design challenges of building in the Sierra Nevada foothills. With this project, Mr. Kemper’s intention is to demonstrate just how efficient and comfortable a building can be.
